BUS GATE IN TORUN WAY

24 June 2008
Local residents have been working with developers to manage the use of Torun Way properly.

Torun Way has been designed, so that when completed, any road user will be able to access the route from Westfield Way but will not be able to continue along Torun Way towards Thamesdown Drive. The finished layout and road markings will guide the user to the right after crossing Haydon Wick Brook into Casterbridge Road allowing a minor and local access through that estate towards Taw Hill.

A "bus gate" (which is not a gate but a pinch point in the road with bus only signs) will be provided just north of the junction with Casterbridge Road once development has been completed.

For the time being whilst access is required into Casterbridge Road for construction traffic, the link road to Westfield Way is a temporary bus only access. All residential traffic is required to use Thamesdown Drive to get to Casterbridge or White Eagle Road.

The current arrangement is only temporary and subject to being adopted within the next 2-3 years. The road is currently the responsibility of the North Swindon Development Company (NSDC).

Once the road is adopted with the permanent "bus gate", drivers attempting to use the road will be committing a traffic offence and appropriate action can be taken by the Police if this is detected.
Cllr David Renard said "As we understand it, heath and safety issues are being addressed by the NDSC, the housebuilders and their contractors and the Council will not take control of the road link and the permanent bus link until it is finished to an adoptable standard. We will continue to push them for a much more robust management of the existing road layout."
