WESTFIELD WAY
11 June 2008
On 27 May, the new road linking Westfield Way with the new northern development opened as a 'buses only' road. Since then local residents and Cllr David Renard have witnessed other vehicles using it as a cut through. The numbers of unauthorised users seems to be increasing daily and it is causing a danger to unsuspecting pedestrians including children who use the two plays areas which are not far from the road.
The road is still owned by the developers and, Councillors are told, there will eventually be a bus gate near the junction with Caterbridge Road on the north side of the brook. However, because development work is still progressing in this area, there are no plans to manage the situation in the short term.
David said "Residents and I have raised this issue with the developers and all they will say is that it is a bus only road and they are unable to enforce that restriction at the present time. This is totally unacceptable as I have already received reports of several 'near misses' between unsuspecting pedestrians and unauthorised vehicles. This route has been designated as a buses only road for years so there is no excuse for not having foreseen this eventuality and making arrangements to manage it. I have made it clear to the developers that, should there be an accident, I will be holding them publicly and wholly responsible."
