URBAN VILLAGE TO BOAST OUT-OF-TOWN SHOPPING
27 November 2001
Not only will Swindon’s latest development house more than 5 500 families, it is already home to what is reputed to be the largest Asda Wal-Mart store in the United Kingdom.
The Orbital Way district centre, which on completion will cover some 360,000 square feet, currently boasts an Asda Wal-Mart, and future planned additions include a garden centre, boutique style shops, cafes and restaurants. Amenities such as a modern health centre, library, crèche and even an ambulance and police station will be in evidence.
According to David Thompson, Priory Vale director, “The development represents a new chapter in Swindon’s retail offering and highlights the importance of the Priory Vale development.”
Further shopping will be available in the village square and will provide for everyday basic needs. The square will promote a sense of community in much the same way as that of a traditional village.
The North Swindon Development Company (NSDC) anticipates the retail arm of the Priory Vale development will have broad appeal to shoppers. Work is now complete on the first stage of the Northern Orbital Road. This provides immediate access to the centre. Parking, which has long been a problem for shoppers in Swindon town centre, will be both free, and in plentiful supply.
